Since her death in 1993, Audrey Hepburn has remained one of the most iconic stars to have ever emerged from the Golden Age of Hollywood. The actress appeared in numerous iconic roles, with starring turns in classic features like Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady. Audrey made her breakout debut on Broadway in 1951 after being personally selected by the author of the novel Gigi to appear in its upcoming Broadway adaptation.

Though Audrey found quick success in the entertainment industry thanks to her charm, looks, and talent, she had been through a difficult childhood that made her appreciate her success all the more. Audrey grew up in Nazi-occupied Holland during World War II and dedicated much of her time to aiding the resistance to the Nazi forces, despite the fact that her family was often starving to the point of eating tulips.
Audrey had studied ballet since childhood, and continued her studies after World War II ended. She also took up modeling, and eventually premiered on the stage in London as a chorus girl. Shortly afterward, Audrey made her aforementioned breakout debut on Broadway.
1964’s My Fair Lady marked the peak of Audrey’s career success, though it certainly didn’t mark the end of the star’s time as an actress. However, during the actress’s later years, she became better known for her humanitarian efforts with UNICEF. These efforts resulted in her being awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George Bush shortly before her death.
